Clearance: Secret required Location: Alexandria VA // Washington DC Position summary Hiring an Optics Specialist (M.S. or PhD) with hands-on LiDAR experience to support development, integration, and analysis of active optical remote sensing systems. The role focuses on optical design, transmitter/receiver chain optimization, point-cloud processing, and system validation for maritime, littoral, and coastal mapping and sensing missions. Key responsibilities Design and optimize LiDAR transmitter/receiver optics, scanning mechanisms, and optical alignment procedures; perform stray-light and SNR analyses. Develop and maintain waveform processing, point-cloud filtering, georeferencing pipelines, and calibration routines for airborne/shipboard LiDAR systems. Lead field campaigns: system checkout, mission planning, data collection, and QA/QC of collected datasets. Provide post-mission analysis and deliver processed geospatial products. Collaborate with software engineers and GIS analysts to integrate LiDAR products into situational awareness tools and naval mapping applications. Prepare technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and user training materials. Required qualifications M.S. or PhD in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Remote Sensing, or equivalent, with demonstrated LiDAR experience. Practical experience operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting LiDAR hardware (airborne, terrestrial, or mobile units) and associated GNSS/IMU integration. Strong signal-processing skills (waveform analysis, filtering, classification), programming ability (Python, MATLAB, or C++), and familiarity with GIS and point-cloud tools (e.g., PDAL, LAStools, ArcGIS). Experience with maritime/coastal LiDAR campaigns, bathymetric LiDAR, or integration of LiDAR with other remote sensors (hyperspectral, SAR). Familiarity with DoD data standards, geospatial metadata requirements, and large-scale data pipelines.
