Description Job Title: Facilities Maintenance Technician
FLSA: Non-Exempt, Full Time, Hourly (40 hours per week)
Reports to: Facilities Director
Wage Range: $21.00 - $27.00 per hour
( new hires may be paid within the lower end of the pay range to start depending on experience)
Summary Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state's premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state's foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Facilities Maintenance Technician will perform general building maintenance and repairs, including, but not limited to inspections, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, basic carpentry, heating & cooling and other building requirements.
Key Responsibilities • Performs general building maintenance and repairs that do not require a specialized technician including, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, changing light bulbs, carpentry, flooring, moving furniture, minor repairs,
• Assists with event setup and breakdown
• Regularly inspects and identifies equipment/machines in need of repair.
• Conducts regular inspections of back and front of house for preventive maintenance ensuring work orders are created in the FacilityOne system for items that need to be addressed.
• Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repair.
• Checks functionality of fire and safety systems.
• Coordinates with the Facilities Director to order supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance
• Assists in moving boxes/packages to their destination within the building.
• Assists in making sure hallways and pathways are kept clear of debris.
• Uses the FacilityOne work order system to report, track progress and complete jobs.
• Assists with treating icy spots and snow removal at all entrances as needed.
• Collaborates and supports Exhibit Team during renovations, installations, or other exhibit needs.
• Conducts daily inspections against facility cleaning plan, coordinating with third-party custodial team manager to optimize cleanliness of the building.
• Conduct spot checks as necessary to ensure restrooms are clean and supplied.
• Spot cleans and assists with upkeep and cleanliness of the building (internally & externally) as needed including but not limited to rugs and floors.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements • High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) or more years proven experience in building maintenance work.
• Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred.
• Familiar with FacilityOne maintenance software a plus.
• Self-motivated; with the ability to organize, work independently, work with tight deadlines, and complete projects on a timely basis.
• Experience with general carpentry and repair including, but not limited to framing, finishing and cabinetry a plus.
• Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems a plus.
• Ability to read technical manuals, catalogs and drawings.
• Ability to take apart machines, equipment or devices to remove and replace defective parts.
• Ability to use standard shop tools including but not limited to hand and power tools.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain a professional demeanor consistent with Science Center culture to create a visitor experience that is inviting, welcoming and dependable.
• Meticulous attention to detail.
• Good working knowledge of MS Office Suite on a PC platform.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and some holidays as needed.
• Ability to be called in for emergencies, such as security/fire alarms at all hours as needed.
• Ability and expectation to work on site.
Physical Requirements • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
• Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
• Uses arms, legs and back muscles for extended periods of time.
• Uses hands to handle and feel objects, tools or controls.
• Reach with hands and arms.
• Ability to climb, stoop, kneel or crouch.
• Ability to see, talk, hear, taste & smell.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Some tasks may require working off the top of a 30 ft. ladder and aerial lifts of more extensive heights.
• May be regularly exposed to caustic chemicals and/or hazardous materials.
• Frequently work near moving mechanical parts.
• Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles.
• Risk of electrical shock and vibration.
• Occasionally work outside in all weather conditions..
