Essential Functions

  • Under general Supervision of the Bureau Chief, serves as the staff training coordinator for the Bureau of Meat and Poultry Inspection.
  • Organizes, plans, develops and facilitates the Meat and Poultry Inspectors (MPIs) and Meat and Poultry Inspector Trainees (MPITs) training program.
  • As the coordinator for staff development, facilitates training sessions, maintains training attendance records and distributes training materials and information.
  • Serves as the training Liaison for the Bureau of MPI with the communication and implementation of new initiatives, notices, directives and guidelines for the Inspection staff.
  • Reviews and Evaluates audit findings regarding the Meat and Poultry Inspection training programs.
  • Provides Staff Training on meat product label requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Specialized Skills

  • Requires 3 years of experience as a meat and poultry inspector, an inspector supervisor, or Enforcement Investigations and Analysis officer.
  • Requires passage of United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspections Services course in Inspection methods or similar equivalent training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with coursework in business or public administration.
  • Requires one year of responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization, or completion of an agency approved professional management training program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers 3 years of experience as a with meat and poultry inspections, an inspection supervision, or Enforcement Investigations and Analysis enforcement.
  • Prefers the passage of United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspections Services course in Inspection methods or similar equivalent training.
  • Prefers experience with training or mentoring employees.
  • Prefers experience with establishing, and/or enhancing, an acceptable working relationship.
  • Prefers experience working with Public Health Information Systems.
  • Prefers basic knowledge of practical psychology and human relations necessary to effectively communicate with persons of all educational levels.
  • Prefers basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Webex to develop training tools and classes.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge in the regulation, notices, directives and use of the public health information systems associated with meat and poultry inspection.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of a name-based background screening and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • This position is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. This job may require a good deal of walking or standing or involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
