Body Shop Technician II - Kearny Mesa Chevrolet Non-Exempt
Job Summary: A Collision Body Technician is responsible for repairing and restoring vehicles that have been involved in accidents or collisions. This role involves assessing vehicle damage, performing necessary repairs, and ensuring that all work meets quality standards and safety regulations.
Essential Functions: - Inspect and assess vehicles for collision damage, identifying areas requiring repair or replacement.
- Review repair orders and damage reports to determine necessary work.
- Perform structural and non-structural body repairs using a variety of tools and techniques.
- Remove and replace damaged parts, such as bumpers, fenders, and panels.
- Use welding equipment to repair or replace metal components.
- Utilize frame-straightening equipment to repair and align vehicle frames and unibody structures.
- Measure and diagnose frame and alignment issues to ensure proper repair.
- Inspect completed repairs to ensure they meet quality standards and manufacturer specifications.
- Perform final vehicle checks to ensure proper functionality of repaired parts and systems.
- Test drive repaired vehicles to ensure that everything is functioning properly.
- Communicate with service advisors and customers regarding repair progress and any additional findings.
- Provide recommendations for additional repairs or maintenance if needed.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including tools and equipment.
- Document repair work, including parts used, labor hours, and repair procedures.
- Update repair orders and records as required.
- Maintain satisfactory attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: - Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a collision center body technician or similar role.
- Valid driver's license and safe driving record; required to have California driver's license within 30 days following date of hire.
- Ability to regularly lift 30 pounds.
- Proficient with computer diagnostic equipment and software.
- Ability to perform all essential functions of the job description.
Preferred Qualifications: - Certifications from Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (ICAR) or Automotive
- Service Excellence (ASE).
- Completion of technical training or certification in collision repair.
- Proficiency in using collision repair tools and equipment.
- Strong knowledge of automotive body repair techniques and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be very detail oriented and have an interest in automotive repair and technology.
- Must have a solid knowledge base of the many functions required in repairing damaged body parts and vehicle bodies. Should be able to interpret vendor products and catalogs.
- Extensive knowledge of all aspects of vehicle repair.
Physical Demands: - Regularly stands, walks, sits; uses hands; reaches with hands and arms; talks and hears. Occasionally climbs or balances; bend, stretch, stoops, kneels, crouches, squats or crawls to perform repairs and inspections; must lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections. Manual dexterity to handle tools and small parts. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Must be able to work in tight spaces.
- Stand for prolonged periods of time.
Environment/Noise: - Work in well-ventilated and well-lit repair shop.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions and equipment that may result in minor injuries.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots may be required to ensure safety while handling parts and equipment.
- Work both indoors and outdoors.
- Noise level is moderate to loud.
