We are looking for an Applications Intern to assist with full-cycle prints. From equipment preparation to post-production and finishing parts, this person will gain knowledge of the applications process. This is an ideal job for Ambitious 2nd or 3rd year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in material science, chemical engineering, additive manufacturing, or a related field looking to gain industry experience in 3D printable materials. This role supports the Applications Team in the design and production of new products. This is a PAID internship.

THE OPPORTUNITY 

The Applications Intern will gain knowledge of a corporate, start-up applications and product design processes by engaging with our dynamic team of applications engineers on projects. The Applications Intern will also have the opportunity to own a project. Projects within the Applications Team vary in scope and function. Some projects are focused on product design and application development, working on guiding a prospective client’s object through design and production optimization cycles. Other projects are focused on process engineering, making the operation of our machines and our processes more robust and efficient. This is all about working with the Applications Team inside and outside of a lab to support the printing and design processes. 

Specifically, this person will: 

• Assist in printing parts/monitoring prints.
• Post process and finish parts.
• Prepare equipment for printing.
• Work on a project that supports the goals of the Applications Team and aligns with the interest of the intern. Potential project examples include: (1) Assess and prepare prospective clients’ objects for printing by taking the object through the entire design and process optimization cycle; (2) Analyze data and review relevant print parameters; (3) Focus on initiatives to improve the machine and printing processes; or (4) Automate print quality algorithms.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU

• Ambitious 2nd or 3rd year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, material science, chemical engineering, additive manufacturing, or related field looking to gain industry experience in 3D printing processes.
• Experience in 3D design, visualizations, and rendering.
• Excellent project management and communication skills.
• You are passionate about scientific and technical problems and analyze these problems with rigor to pose innovative and practical solutions.
• You focus on the details, always looking for new ways to do things better the next time. 
• You are a problem-solver and trouble-shooter. When something does not work, you are resilient and do what it takes to figure it out. The phrase “I don’t know” is always followed by “but I’m going to figure it out.” 
• You are task oriented. You are agile at prioritizing tasks as well as developing and sticking to project timelines.
• You are a strong collaborator and a team player. You can work solo, but you thrive off team synergy and enjoy working with a team to achieve a common goal. 
• Enjoy getting your hands dirty. We are a start-up which means we need people to roll up their sleeves and that is what you like to do.

HOW YOU WILL REALLY STAND OUT

• Hands on experience with vat polymerization 3D printing.
• Knowledge of design for additive manufacturing.
• Understanding of fluid flow and heat transfer.

HERE’S WHAT WE ANTICIPATE FOR YOUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE WITH AZUL 3D

Within two to four weeks, you will: 

• Become familiar with the Applications Team and processes.
• Gain insight into how our 3D printer functions.
• Shadow members of the Applications Team and assist with printing parts and monitoring prints.
• Shadow members of the Applications Team and assist with post process and finishing parts.
• Prepare equipment for printing.

Within four to eight weeks, you will: 

• Independently and successfully print parts and monitor prints.
• Understand post processing techniques and appropriately post process printed parts.
• Produce a project with a focus on an Application Team need and the intern’s interest and experience. Sample project topics are provided in the description.
